Nobody wants to get into a car crash, but instead of trying not to think about it, make sure you're prepared to deal with the worst when it does happen.

According to AAA, there are four things you should do immediately after a crash:

  1. Help any injured victims. Don't attempt to move anyone unless they are in immediate danger, such as from a fire, because you could cause them serious spinal damage. Call 911.
  2. Turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, and pull to the side of the road if possible. Set out reflective triangles or road flares (if there is no danger of igniting leaking gasoline).
  3. Call the police. They may choose not to come to the scene if damage to the cars is minor, and if nobody is injured, but it's best to let them decide. Having a proper police report can help protect you from liability, even if the other driver says they're fine.
  4. Take pictures of the accident scene, and get the other driver's name, vehicle information, and insurance.
